“...along with the other animals, the stones, the trees, and the clouds, we ourselves are characters within a huge story that is visibly unfolding all around us, participants within the vast imagination, or Dreaming, of the world.”

*David Abram, The Spell of the Sensuous: Perception and Language in a More-Than-Human World

In thinking about our place within the web of life, how can drawing connect us to the land, the elements and the more than human world? This workshop will cultivate nature connection through experimental drawing and body awareness. Over the course of two days, an embodied and playful approach will expand and, maybe even, transform your visual language. This workshop is open to artists working in all media, those wishing to deepen connection with the living world, their drawing practice and/or explore a more ecological practice.
Innovative drawing exercises and mindful awareness practices will bring about a broad discovery of new marks, forms and symbols. We’ll spend slow time both in and out doors in the extra ordinary North Mayo Coast and landscape- abstracting from the land and the elements, with the breath, the senses, movement and objects.
We’ll work with natural sustainable materials (botanical inks, chalks and charcoals made by Joanna), homemade drawing tools and found objects. The new lexicons and discoveries will be distilled into a visual notebook, an illuminated resource for after the workshop.
Join Joanna to delve into the concepts, processes and methodologies central to her current work. There will be a slideshow, group discussion and plenty of one to one. Participants can expect to leave enlivened with a deeper connection to their personal drawing vocabulary, their body and the living world.
*David Abrams, Cultural ecologist and philosopher, is best known for his work bridging the philosophical tradition of phenomenology with environmental and ecological issues.
Course cost €160. A materials fee (homemade drawing materials, tools and paper) of €40 is payable at the start of the course.
There will be moderate walking over the 2 days. Please dress accordingly, bring an outdoor seat/cushion and a packed lunch.
Email Joanna directly if you have any questions about the class in general: joanna@joannakidney.com
