This workshop is an introduction to contemporary printmaking. In other words, we’ll learn how artists are making prints today. The workshop is open to people at all levels of experience. The only pre-requisites are a desire to explore the world of printmaking and a willingness to get your hands dirty. We will begin by learning basic techniques such as dry point, collagraphy, carborundum, relief prints and overlaying with different colours. We will then move on to stenciling and making monoprints that incorporate drawing and painting. We will work with various materials including found objects. Participants will be encouraged to allow the state of the materials, always subject to nature’s random forces and processes, to guide and inspire the work. Based on an interactive approach, instruction is offered in both English and French and will be adapted to the individual’s needs and interests. This course is designed to push the boundaries of each participant’s practice. The emphasis will be on experimentation. There will be presentations and discussions of prints being made today; large format prints, mixed-media prints and multidisciplinary installations. Throughout the week and in the company of other artists from different countries, the work in the studio is enhanced by local field trips. The countryside around Ballinglen is steeped in history and natural beauty. The rolling farmland, the pre-historic Céide Fields, the majestic Atlantic and dramatic skies will transform the way you see, think and work.
