“Abstracting Ireland through Paint" will immerse you in the beauty and mystery of Ireland through abstract painting and poetry. This workshop is for artists with some prior painting experience who are seeking to deepen their painting practice — both inwardly in terms of subconscious, personal expression and outwardly in the formal and technical qualities of the work itself. You will be encouraged to loosen up, experiment and trust your intuition. Daily walks to the sea and surrounding rural area are geared to increase your powers of observation and provide inspiration for abstraction.

Ballinglen offers full access to a well-lit studio with individual workspaces, a library with hundreds of art books and The Ballinglen Museum of Art where you can view curated exhibitions of original artwork.

Emphasis in this workshop will be on various methods of abstraction and in-depth studies of colour and composition using water media on paper.  We will be painting subliminally quick ink sketches to Irish poetry and music as well as analysing paintings by a variety of Irish and international artists at the contemporary museum in Ballycastle as well as online. Individualised instruction and feedback plus a spirit of positive support, class discussion and communal meals will provide the format for immersive learning in this class. One full day will be set aside for a tour of local historic and prehistoric sites along the wildly stunning coastline.
