A unique opportunity to work at the prestigious Ballinglen Arts Foundation. for a select group of ten artists to spend nine days in rural Ireland drawing and painting with artist Andrew Wykes. The workshop is interned for all levels, although if beginning, some experience is desirable. This course is for drawing materials and acrylic or oil paint only. Andrew Wykes will provide individualised instruction and criticism. Plein aire excursions and varied in-side studio methods, discussions, and presentations will provide the format for an intensive, exciting learning experience. The focus is on the landscape and sea of this part of North Mayo by experiencing first-hand our reaction to the magic of the place and its rich visual and atmospheric milieu.

Wykes emphasises the importance of drawing and colour as a foundation for painting. His teaching is not concerned with embellishing a safe stereo-typical style but with improving students' understanding of the formal elements, shape, surface, space form and analogy. There will be ample opportunity to discuss each other’s work and take a second in-depth look at other diverse international painters throughout history, enriching our understanding. The class will alternate between the studio and on-location. The emphasis will be outside but weather-dependent. The course is structured with some flexibility, and presented here is the format I will follow, which has been a success for students in previous workshops.
